What can’t be criticised is just how efficient the system is in the real-world: we saw close to 55mpg on a mixed roads test in fairly foul conditions, which is even in excess of the official claimed 52.3mpg figure. It’s the gap between these two cars, however small (the C-HR is 4385mm long and the RAV4 4600mm), that the 4460mm-long Corolla Cross looks to plug. In the metal, it still looks like it sits quite close to the ground and it doesn’t appear to be the tallest visually either even though it’s officially 185mm taller than the Corolla hatchback.All this while lacking the fun styling of the C-HR (a car that still looks so fresh a good five years after launch), and the chunky, rugged appeal and SUV presence of the RAV4. While Toyota might call it an SUV, it actually looks more like an Allroad-style estate car. Some European countries have already decided to take it, and we tried a European-spec version in Denmark on judging duty for the 2023 Car of the Year contest. It’s a global model that’s been on sale in some markets including the US for almost a year.
Under the hood, the carmaker installed an inline-four, naturally aspirated, gasoline engine paired either with a CVT.The Corolla Cross is officially billed as an SUV version of the hatchback. Thanks to its SUV-like profile, the Corolla Cross was a new alternative in the crossover market, and Toyota built it with rear- or all-wheel-drive system. Atop the center stack, Toyota’s designers placed a floating-looking infotainment screen. On the right side of the cluster, a TFT display showed information from the onboard computer. Inside the instrument panel, the carmaker placed two large dials with two additional gauges on their lower side for the coolant temperature and fuel level. Inside, the Corolla Cross retained most of the features that made the Corolla a best-selling car in the Toyota lineup. In addition, the carmaker placed unpainted, black plastic moldings on the lower side of the bodywork to protect the paint from scratches.
It looked more like the way a Rav4 should be, with a broad trapezoidal grille at the front and a pair of slim, swept-back headlights. But since the original concept of a light crossover built on the same platform as its best-selling nameplate model was good, the carmaker did it again and thus resulted in the Corolla Cross.īased on the same TNGA-C (Toyota New Global Architecture-Compact) platform as the Corolla, the Cross version featured a different design than its known hatchback sibling. Over time the ties between the two models became barely visible. Some might remember that the Japanese carmaker built the first Rav4 generation on top of a Corolla platform back in 1994. Toyota introduced a crossover vehicle based on the same platform as the Corolla in 2021 and named it Corolla Cross.
